Lobotomy is a now largely discredited surgical procedure that was once used to treat various mental disorders, particularly in the mid-20th century.
It involved the surgical removal or damage to parts of the brain’s frontal lobes to alleviate symptoms such as severe mental illness or emotional distress.
However, the procedure had significant and often irreversible side effects, including personality changes, cognitive impairments, and emotional blunting.
Lobotomies are no longer considered an acceptable treatment for mental health conditions and have been largely replaced by more humane and effective therapeutic approaches and medications.
