The decantation funnel consists of a conical-shaped container typically made from glass or plastic. How does a separation funnel work?
The principle behind the decantation funnel’s operation is simple yet effective. When two immiscible liquids, such as oil and water, are poured into the funnel, gravity causes them to separate into distinct layers due to their differing densities. The less dense liquid will rise to the top, while the denser liquid will settle at the bottom. The stopcock is positioned just above the interface between these two layers.
To perform the separation, the stopcock is opened slightly to release the liquid layer of interest. By controlling the flow rate and ensuring that the funnel remains steady, the desired liquid can be drained without mixing with the other phase. This process is particularly useful when dealing with liquids that are difficult to separate by other means, such as filtration or evaporation.
